As I look at myself and my husband, we are both flawed and imperfect people.
Because of that, we are imperfect parents.
As much as we try to get it right with our children, there are times we don’t. And that is okay. Do you know why? If the Maker of the universe chose Mary and Joseph, two imperfect people to parent, raise, train, love, guide, and teach His son Jesus, then we are the very best imperfect parents for our children.
Imperfect does not equal terrible or sinful. It simply means you are imperfect. Not one human being was perfect except Jesus, the son of God.
If God chose imperfect parents to raise His one and only perfect son, then what hope it gives to the rest of us to parent our children every single day!
The Lord blessed you with the children you have, not by accident but for a divine reason. The Lord blessed you with the child(ren) you have because before the creation of the universe. He foresaw who needed you as a parent.
Children are a gift from the Lord; they are a reward from him. – Psalm 127:3, NLT
Children are a GIFT from the Lord to us. We are so blessed to be able to walk arm in arm with the Lord as we parent our child(ren). Because the truth is the Lord is our parent. He is always teaching, loving, guiding, edifying, and convicting us in our life. IF we are open to listen to His words and His ways in the Bible.
As a parent I need to be intentional in shaping them with an eternal perspective. Yes, it’s important that they can read, write, do well socially, learn various languages, be a good friend, obey, and clean their room. But MOST importantly we need to help them become the person God has created them to be.
Make it a habit to pray and ask the Lord to give you wisdom and understanding about your child(ren).
Prayer is powerful! He knows each of our child(ren) even better than us because He created them! The Lord honors the prayers of a desire to be wise parents.
How can we honor the Lord with our imperfect parenting?
Let us do these three things well!
- Love the Lord with OUR whole heart.
- Be intentional talking about the Lord with our child(ren). Opportunities happen all around us daily. Are we listening to the Holy Spirit teaching them about the Lord?
- Spend time daily praying and reading the Bible together.
Enjoy this time we have with our children.
Don’t wish it away.
Our time with them is a gift.
There are days you might feel overwhelmed, but always remember your Father God is with you, helping you along the way of this imperfect parenthood.
Let us resist the thought that our child(ren) are a bother, rather let us believe that it is an honor to parent our children in the way of the Lord.
To show them His love daily.
To encourage their little hearts to trust in the Maker of their soul.
To inspire them to pray big prayers to the Lord.
“Thank you Jesus for letting this imperfect parent raise these amazing children.”
God doesn’t call us to be perfect. He calls us to walk with purpose.
May we never stray from the calling we have before us- the calling of parenthood. Flaws and imperfections and all.
Say this with me, “Today I choose to trust YOU, Lord, to guide, lead, teach, train, and assist me as I parent those you have blessed me with. You are my strength. You are the parent that guides me as I guide my own child(ren). What hope that gives us for today and all the days to come!
“Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.” – Psalm 119:105, NLT
